Immigration Movements – Deferred Action Began Today

Today, August 15, 2012, undocumented immigrants began applying for “Deferred Action” under President Obama’s discretionary policy.  The policy is basically designed to allow undocumented immigrants, 30 yrs. old or younger, to remain here and work for at least 2 years, on the following conditions:

  • arrived in the US before age 16
  • lived in the US continuously for at least the last five years
  • are in school, graduated, or honorably discharged from our military, AND
  • commited no serious crimes and do not threaten public safety

Approximately 16,000 people in Oregon are expected to be eligible, and nationwide the estimate is 1.2 million people eligible.

The Deferred Action policy is totally discretionary and comes with no promise that it will last.
