Amnesty’s General Meeting in Denver gave representatives from Southern Oregon, Bend and Portland chapters a chance to learn what chapters across the US are doing, and plan some coordinated efforts for the future. Workshops included advice on successful campaigns involving women’s rights, immigrant rights, abolishing the death penalty, use of social media, closing Gitmo and much more. The US Ambassador to Syria spoke to us, as well as Amnesty’s new Executive Director, Suzanne Nossel. We also had a chance to meet legislative coordinators, country specialists, urgent action coordinators and, of course, our field organizers. Many high schoolers, university students, and long-time Amnesty members swapped actions and brainstorming ideas. Representatives from all the Oregon chapters will be meeting monthly by telephone to improve coordinated efforts across the State, which has a growing Amnesty presence.
